Rockdale is home to influential parts of Texas’ history and thanks to the work of the Rockdale Historical Society our history will be preserved for years to come.
The society was founded in 1998 with the mission is to preserve the rich heritage of Rockdale and the surrounding communities. The society funds restoration projects and hosts several area events to promote historical preservation awareness. The first restoration project and reason for formation was to purchase the Rockdale International & Great Northern Passenger Depot and restore it to its former glory and open a museum.
After the award-winning depot project, the society created an operational blacksmith shop on the same site as the depot museum. The society collects historical artifacts, photographs, and stories about Rockdale’s history and that of Texas.
The historical society is a non-profit 501c3 organization and its membership is open to the public. Check the Rockdale Historical Society’s website for information on meeting days and times. The society also appreciates the help of volunteers to inventory and record donations and work at the museum.
